Portrait of the area
Located to the west of Brest, Plouzané benefits from a great location. Sited right on the coast, it is the Brest area’s lookout point for its harbour. Enjoying the coast, the countryside and the town, Plouzané offers a remarkable quality of life and is careful to preserve its calm atmosphere.
The town of Plouzané
Over the centuries, Plouzané’s strategic location, with its 9 kilometres of coastline along the Brest Narrows, has put the town in the front line of the harbour’s defence. In addition to the Minou lighthouse that guided ships, the Plouzané coastline has been home to no fewer than 4 forts: the Minou, the Mengant, the Dellec and the Pointe du Diable fort.
The origin of Plouzané
Legend has it that Senán, a fifth-century Irish bishop, founded the parish that bears his name today: Plouzané comes from « Plou Sané », Breton for « the parish of Sané ».
A town built around four main centres
In 1965, the town had a population of around 2,500, mainly concentrated in the historic market town area in the north of the town. The real transformation began in the early 1970s. The move of Thomson-CSF (now renamed Thales) to Brest and the establishment of CNEXO (now Ifremer) at the Pointe du diable led to the first wave of urban development in La Trinité, to the south of Plouzané.
In the 1970s, Plouzané was still split between two centres separated by large expanses of countryside: on the one hand, Le Bourg, home to the town hall, post office, church and a few shops, and on the other, La Trinité, which was expanding rapidly.
To address this gap, a new district was developed in 1975, in the middle of the fields between Le Bourg and La Trinité: Castel-Nevez, where it was decided to locate the new town hall. The development of this area has created an entirely new central hub, with primary and middle schools, gymnasium, housing, etc. Nearby, the Mescouezel business park has added an economic dimension to this new centre.
Later, a number of schools, businesses and research and teaching establishments were set up in the south of the commune to form the Brest Iroise Technopôle. Many of these establishments have an international reputation and are mainly active in the fields of marine sciences, telecommunications, information technology, imaging and biotechnology…
Shops & services
Plouzané’s shops and services are spread across the whole of the municipality, while for the most part based around the three main centres: Le Bourg, Castel-Nevez not far from the town hall and La Trinité on the Place du Commerce.
